Prohibited Items

Things you cannot post on American Gun Trader, with the reason for each.

Some items cannot be posted on American Gun Trader. Listing a prohibited item gets the listing removed and may result in account action.

Never allowed

  • Machine guns made after May 19, 1986 (cannot be transferred to civilians)
  • Unregistered NFA items
  • Stolen firearms
  • Firearms with serial numbers removed, altered, or obliterated
  • "Auto sears", "lightning links", and other conversion devices that turn semi-auto into full-auto
  • Manufactured explosives (other than legal ammunition)
  • Body armor in states where civilian possession is restricted (e.g. Connecticut, New York for certain types)

Restricted — requires verification

These can be listed but require additional verification:

  • NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles, registered machine guns, AOWs): seller must be qualified to sell them.
  • "Assault weapon" features in states that ban them: listings to those states are blocked automatically.
  • Magazines over 10 rounds: shipping blocked to states with capacity limits.

State-specific restrictions

Your listings may be restricted from shipping to certain states based on that state's laws. The platform tries to flag obvious conflicts, but the legal responsibility for compliance is yours.

Non-firearm restrictions

  • Counterfeit or replica items represented as real
  • Items in violation of intellectual property (counterfeits)
  • Anything illegal under federal or shipping carrier rules

If you are not sure

Contact support before posting. We would rather answer a question up front than remove a listing later.
