Florida Gun Owners Feel Betrayed: A Call to Action for…

Florida gun owners feel betrayed by Republican lawmakers. Discover the truth behind the legislative failures and the call to action for Second Amendment…

Florida has made absolutely no sense to me. It's a pro-gun state with a Republican supermajority. In theory, even with a few anti-gun Republicans running around, gun rights should be a foregone legislative conclusion. However, the reality is starkly different. Pro-Second Amendment bills have languished and died in the legislature, primarily due to the actions of those who claim to support our rights but have acted otherwise.

The Betrayal of Florida Gun Owners

Once praised as a Republican ally of gun owners, Florida Rep. Paul Renner now faces fierce criticism from pro-gun organizations who accuse him of betraying the Second Amendment. Grassroots activists have begun examining his record more closely since he announced his candidacy for governor. As Speaker of the Florida House from 2022 to 2024, Renner rose to the heights of state Republican leadership, yet his record has generated deep distrust among grassroots gun owners and some of the nation’s most principled pro-gun organizations.

Legislative Failures and Broken Promises

Gun rights activists have been sounding the alarms about Renner since his 2018 vote in the wake of the Parkland tragedy, where he supported sweeping gun control legislation that raised the minimum age to purchase rifles from 18 to 21 and created “red flag” laws. This is a clear infringement on the rights of Floridians. As activists point out, he voted for a measure that curtailed their rights, and his subsequent assertions that it was a flawed bill do little to alleviate the concerns of those he has let down.

Open Carry: A Missed Opportunity

One of Renner’s most contentious actions was blocking open carry. In 2023, Rep. Mike Beltran filed an amendment to a permitless carry bill that would have allowed open carry. Renner’s leadership forced the amendment’s withdrawal, claiming it wasn’t “the right vehicle or the right time” to pass this amendment. This upset many Florida gun rights activists who feel that their voices are being ignored.

The Need for Accountability

Florida lawmakers need to understand that they cannot claim to be pro-gun while refusing to repeal the 1987 ban on open carry. The refusal to even allow a vote on pro-gun laws is unacceptable. It is time for Florida voters to step up and hold their representatives accountable. When lawmakers say there’s no “appetite” for pro-gun laws, it is up to the voters to show them that there is.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

Republicans throughout the nation need to be afraid for their jobs if they refuse to back the Second Amendment. It is not enough to simply oppose gun control; they must actively support pro-gun legislation. The time for action is now. Join the fight for our rights and ensure that our voices are heard.

“When they say there’s no 'appetite' for pro-gun laws, remove them.”
